Llum Blanc is a blend of Grenache Gris and Macabeu planted between 1919 and 2008 on very shallow schist soils giving a crystalline and mineral character. Llum is Catalan for light. Horse riding, fishing, bike riding, farm work, dinner and wine all stuffed into agricultural college created love. Stephane and Marjorie couldn’t help but bond and with their shared likes and loves their first vine parcels were in Roussillon, on a hill with a streak of white quartz amidst black schist. It was called “Roc Blanc” from where Roc Des Anges was born. It was 2001. Cue 2008 and biodynamics beckoned, inspiration lying in nature bringing energy to the wine with the vines and the wines leading the way. The sense of place is the hallmark of Roc Des Anges, distinctive wines made for and from the soils; limestone and sandstone from the bottom of ancient seas and volcanic rocks including basalt and rhyolite. Llum Blanc is delicate and light with aniseed florals and a flinty intensity. The fresh acidity is head clearing yet there is a touch of fat from the ageing in oak and Llum has a finish both saline and mineral and very very long.
