Cas’ Amaro is a family-driven wine project with vineyards across Portugal, and their work in the Dão (particularly at Quinta da Fontalta in Santa Comba Dão) shows what this granite-soiled, mountainous region can do with its native reds. The Porco Espinho Tinto 2023 is one of their newer releases in the tribute “Porco Espinho” line.
This red is a blend of Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz (also known as Tempranillo in parts of Portugal) and Jaén grape varieties. Harvest is by hand, and fermentation takes place at around 24-26ºC, with frequent punch-downs during maceration to extract colour and tannin from the skins. After fermentation, it is aged for approximately 8 months on lees in stainless steel which helps to round out the texture without overshadowing the fruit.
In the glass it shows a light ruby hue. On the nose there’s a fresh profile of forest fruits (red berry, perhaps some strawberry or red currant) with lightly herbal or vegetable hints. The palate is firm: defined tannins, moderate acidity, slightly dry finish that speaks of structure and perhaps a touch of rustic charm. It’s not overly heavy, but it certainly has enough backbone to show its Dão identity.
