For three generations, the Agerre family has cultivated their single vineyard in Getaria, crafting authentic Basque Txakoli with a deep respect for tradition. Today, Emilio Agerre leads the winery alongside his wife and son, producing just 12,000 cases annually—a true reflection of artisanal winemaking.
Set against the wild Atlantic backdrop, Agerre’s vines thrive in sandy loam soils over gravel, with the steep coastal slopes providing excellent drainage. The Hondarribi Zuria vines, aged 10 to 30 years, are trained to 6ft high, ensuring good ventilation and minimising ground moisture—ideal conditions for creating bright, zesty Txakoli.
Txakoli (pronounced Tcha-Ko-Lee) is a Basque speciality: light, bone-dry, and naturally spritzy, with a refreshing, low-alcohol charm. Traditionally, it’s poured from head height into a glass at waist level—a signature flourish that aerates the wine and enhances its delicate sparkle.
At Agerre, the Hondarribi Zuria grapes are fermented in whole clusters for added complexity, using native yeasts and six weeks of lees contact to build depth and character. The result? A crisp, lively white wine that captures the spirit of the Basque coast.
