Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine produced by Slingshot Wines, a boutique winery located in Napa Valley, California. Oh, Napa Valley, we’ll return to you anon. The winery is known for producing small-lot, handcrafted wines from sustainably farmed vineyards in the region. Slingshot is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from various vineyards in Napa Valley. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation with the wine aged in French oak barrels for 18 months before bottling. The wine has a deep, ruby colour and aromas of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry, with hints of vanilla, cedar, and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rich, with flavours of dark fruit and mocha. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and the finish is long and complex. Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon is considered to be a classic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with its bold, fruit-forward style and well-structured tannins. And for those Americanophiles here’s a quick blast of Napa Valley. With more than 400 wineries, it is considered to be one of the premier wine regions in the world, with small, boutique operations to large, well-established estates. It is primarily known for Cabernet Sauvignon but other varietals such as Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Chardonnay are also popular. The terroir of Napa Valley is defined by its location, climate, soils, and topography. Located in northern California, Napa Valley is a long, narrow valley that stretches for approximately 30 miles from north to south. The valley is bordered by two mountain ranges, the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Mountains to the east. The climate of Napa Valley is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The valley is also affected by the maritime influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, which moderates the temperature and brings cool ocean breezes into the valley. The diurnal temperature variation in the valley is also significant, with warm daytime temperatures and cool night time temperatures, which can help to preserve the acidity and balance in the grapes. The soils of Napa Valley are diverse and complex with some of the most common being volcanic, alluvial, and sedimentary. Topography wise, Napa Valley is also diverse, with a range of elevations, slopes, and aspects found throughout the region. The steep hillsides and mountain slopes can provide ideal conditions for growing grapes, including excellent drainage, exposure to sunlight, and varied microclimates. However climate change, wildfires and the sustainability of the Cabernet Sauvignon crop are all causing concern as is the purchase of many smaller, family owned wineries and independents by mega corporations. In a nutshell, buy the wine of the artisans now before things change irreparably. Slingshot is a great start. And it won’t break the bank.
