Samo is the nickname of 70s/80s NYC neo-expressionist and graffiti artist Jean Michel Basquiat who flowered and died young. He is one of Etienne Fort`s favourite artists, hence the tribute of this wine. Etienne, while still in his early 20s, used to sell his family`s high quality grapes to the local co-op where they ended up as an anonymous addition to generic sparkling wines. His older, low yielding vines at 450m altitude growing in deep limestone-clay soils were obviously worthy of far better end products and Etienne released his first domaine bottlings of Cremant and Blanquette de Limoux in 2013. Now accepted as one of the flag bearers of the new Limousine winemaking crew, Etienne turned fully organic in 2015. His vineyards are close to Roquetaillade in Limoux in Languedoc, arguably the best terroir in the region. Samo is 100% Chardonnay from plots at 400m and 520m so is bursting with fresh vitality. 9 months in acacia barrels gives the wine a wonderful balance while maintaining the florality and white fruit aromas. Citrus and apple and a mouth watering acidity make this a drink till the bottle’s empty type of affair.
